Holiday Wellness Tips for Truck Drivers: Give Yourself the Gift of Health
By Hope Zvara, Founder of Mother Trucker Yoga®
It’s that time of year again. We’re shopping for everyone else, making lists, trying to figure out what people want, and probably spending more money than we planned. holiday wellness tips for truck drivers
But drivers, while you’re busy thinking about everyone else this holiday season, I want you to think about one more person.
You.
Professional drivers spend an incredible amount of time taking care of everything around them. You take care of the truck, the load, the customer, the deadline, and your family, even when you’re hundreds or thousands of miles away.
And somewhere in all of that, it becomes really easy to put yourself last.
So instead of another gadget, sweatshirt, or something for the truck, maybe this year you give yourself something different.
The gift of better health.
And no, I’m not talking about waiting until January 1 to completely overhaul your life. These holiday wellness tips for truck drivers are about small things you can start doing right now.
Give Yourself the Gift of Movement
You knew this one was coming.
But I’m not asking you to spend an hour in a gym.
Give yourself 15 minutes of on purpose movement. Walk around the truck stop. Do ten squats before getting back into your seat. Stretch beside your truck. Move while you’re waiting at a dock.
And those 15 minutes don’t even have to happen all at once.
Five minutes here. Two minutes there. Another five minutes later.
That’s the entire idea behind my 15-Minute Wellness Method.
Stop waiting until you have time to exercise and start looking for opportunities to move.
Give Yourself the Gift of Sleep
Sleep is one of those things we tend to sacrifice first when life gets busy.
And I know sleep on the road isn’t always easy or predictable. But instead of focusing on what you can’t control, look at what you can.
Could you put the phone down 30 minutes earlier? Turn off the TV? Make your sleeper darker and cooler? Create a simple routine that tells your body it’s time to shut down?
Sometimes taking better care of yourself means doing less, not more.
Give Yourself the Gift of Real Food
Please don’t turn the holidays into another diet.
Instead, ask yourself a much simpler question:
How can I add more real food to my day?
Grab an apple. Eat some eggs. Add vegetables to your meal. Keep nuts, seeds, fruit, or other simple foods in the truck.
The closer your food looks to how it started, the better.
You don’t have to eat perfectly to eat better. One better choice is still a better choice.
Give Yourself the Gift of Hydration
This one almost feels too simple, but simple is usually where we need to start.
Drink water.
We think about hydration when it’s 90 degrees outside, but your body still needs water in December.
Keep a water bottle within reach and actually drink from it throughout the day. And remember, another coffee, soda, or energy drink isn’t necessarily the same thing as giving your body the water it needs.
Give Yourself the Gift of Boundaries
This one might be harder than doing the squats.
Learn to say no sometimes.
You don’t have to say yes to every request, every extra commitment, every favor, and every person who wants a piece of your time.
There is a difference between being there for the people you love and completely draining yourself trying to be everything for everyone.
Protecting your time and energy is part of taking care of your health too.
Give Yourself the Gift of Time
When was the last time you gave yourself ten minutes without feeling guilty about it?
Take the walk. Sit quietly. Call someone you love. Stretch. Listen to music. Pray. Drink your coffee without scrolling through your phone.
Whatever helps you reconnect with yourself, make room for it.
And before you tell me you don’t have time, think about how easily ten minutes disappears scrolling on your phone.
We make time for the things we’ve decided are important.
Make sure you’re somewhere on that list.
Don’t Wait Until January 1
This might be the most important holiday wellness tip I can give any driver.
Don’t spend the entire month of December ignoring your health because you’ve decided January 1 is when everything changes.
You don’t need a “new you.”
You need one small decision today.
Drink the water. Take the walk. Eat the apple. Do ten squats. Go to bed. Say no. Take the fifteen minutes.
Then wake up tomorrow and make another choice.
Drivers, you spend your entire year delivering the things other people need. This holiday season, make sure you’re giving something back to yourself too.
Because the truck can be replaced.
You can’t.
The healthier you are, the more energy, time, and life you have available for the people and things you work so hard for in the first place.
So maybe the best gift this year isn’t something that comes in a box.
Give yourself the gift of your health.
It’s one gift you’ll never regret investing in.
Happy Holidays, drivers. Take care of yourself, keep moving, and remember that small, simple changes add up.
